New UNIBAG products

Unibag expands its product portfolio and develops customized reusable products for the industry.

With these tailor-made products, Unibag aims to contribute to the goal of generating less waste and promoting the circular economy within the logistics operations of companies, says Eliana Moreno, Innovation Manager of Unibag.

Today, more and more companies are concerned about sustainability and care for the environment. With regard to packaging, most companies start by focusing on the packaging of the final products that reach the end consumer, making sure that they are eco-designed and can be recyclable or compostable. But more and more companies are not only concerned about that, but also about the packaging they use in their industrial and logistics operations.

Unibag, the leading manufacturer of reusable bags in Chile, which has been operating in the market since 2013, inaugurated an Innovation area in 2022 to begin to address the needs of companies and propose solutions tailored to their needs that help to give greater circularity to their inputs and packaging. “In this process we were greatly helped by the clean production agreement for packaging and packaging Transiting to a Circular Economy that we implemented this year, with the support of Cenem,” says Pablo Rubio, Head of Sustainability at Unibag. With this APL, Unibag implemented the “Circular Opportunities” methodology within its processes to identify the main gaps in the circular economy.

Reusable cover for Big Belt pallets

Thanks to this evaluation, Unibag introduces in Chile the reusable bags, through an exclusive representation, to generate a sustainable option to replace the disposable plastic film used in the palletizing of products. Eliana Moreno, Innovation and Sustainability Manager, is leading these new developments. “We have had a very good response from our customers about the reusable products we manufacture and we wanted to expand our product offering by addressing a problem that all companies have today when it comes to palletizing,” says Eliana.

It is estimated that between 300 and 400 grams of plastic are used for each pallet, which multiplied by the 500 uses that the sleeve allows, gives a total of almost 200 kg of plastic that could be avoided for each Big Belt pallet sleeve. On the other hand, these sleeves generate cost savings of between 80% and 90% and a 98% reduction in waste, according to testimonials from customers who use them. In addition, these casings can be repaired to extend their useful life and can also be recycled at the end of their use. These are services that Unibag also offers to its customers.

Covers for metal cages

Another product offered by Unibag, in exclusive representation of Big Belt, are the reusable covers for cages, which, like the pallet covers, are made to measure for each customer and in different materials, depending on whether or not visibility of the contents of the cage is required. This product is generally used within company operations and also avoids the consumption of disposable plastic film and product loss.

Reusable bags for product transportation

In line with the intention of having more sustainable packaging, Unibag is also developing reusable bags for product transportation. These are bags with inviolable security seals that can support up to 50 kg. approx. and are used to transport all kinds of products inside them. These sacks replace the use of disposable cardboard boxes, rigid plastic boxes or disposable plastic sacks that are normally used. These bags are sealed with a tamper-evident seal and have an identifying flap for traceability. They allow labels to be attached and removed without damaging your material. Their rigid base allows them to be stacked and after use they can be folded, taking up very little space when empty, so that they can be returned to their place of use.

These bags could also be used for E-Commerce shipments with in-store pick-up and, if the shipping company has reverse return logistics, they could even reach the end consumer. Like the other products mentioned above, these bags can be repaired to extend their useful life and recycled at the end of their useful life.

These products that promote the circular economy help companies to have a more sustainable operation and reduce their waste and Co2 emissions. A reduction in the use of disposable containers and packaging also has a positive impact by generating savings in the payments companies must make under the REP law, which as of 2023 will require companies to pay for the single-use containers and packaging they place on the market.
